Seven alleged individuals of German far-left group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
