A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
